Dr Mahnaz Alsharif

Sports Medicine

Professional profile

I am a sports physician, GP and specialist advisor to Teamworks (GP) Ltd, which provides nationwide medical support for elite athletes, performers and therapists.

I qualified from University of Bristol as a medical doctor in 1996, specialising in general practice, sports medicine (University of Bath), and most recently health promotion to limit the effects of ageing. Since 2002 I have been the Bath City Football Club Doctor and also provide medical cover to the local amateur athletic, boxing and equestrian clubs.

Since 2005 my work with TeamWorks has involved a wide range of input for elite athletes and professional performers, including screening, health promotion and performance enhancement, illness and injury prevention, diagnosis and management of injuries through to return to full fitness.

Alongside Sports medicine and medical activities, I also have a PhD in Biochemistry from University of Bath with research interests in molecular genetics of DNA damage and repair. During my post-doctoral research I supervised MSc and PhD students and worked as a molecular biologist on mechanisms involved in the control of DNA repair. I am the author of 9 publications and poster presentations. I have presented my findings at national and international conferences.

Currently I am researching the infulence of genetics on running performance. In my clinic work I am developing an interest in the use of dynamic ultrasound to assess and monitor injuries and allow for accurately guided injections.

I am athletic myself and have completed a number of half-marathons and British 10Ks.

Personal profile

The qualities I have developed as an academic have deeply strengthened my commitments as a medical doctor and have provided a thorough grounding in the sciences underpinning Sports Medicine. My post-graduate research and post-doctoral work has refined my decision making, problem solving and analytical skills. My use of logical and clinical reasoning in an environment that demands a genuine personal dedication led to my appointment as a specialist advisor to TeamWork (GB) Ltd

I am aware of the importance of maintaining recreational interests in order to cope with the professional stresses of a medical career. I run regularly, enjoy cinema and music. I write poetry and hope to be able to publish my poems one day.
