Professional profile

Mr Burwell is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at CircleBath and the Royal United Hospital, Bath and also has an honorary contract as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath where he runs the specialist hip clinic.

He qualified as a doctor from the University of London and undertook specialist surgical training in Orthopaedics and trauma on the North West Thames Rotation based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, completing his final year of training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore. He went on to receive advanced training in adult hip reconstruction as the Arthroplasty Fellow to Professor Don Howie at the University of South Australia.

Mr Burwell has developed expertise in all forms of adult hip reconstruction and joint replacement including the use of cemented and un-cemented hip replacement implants and modern materials such as metal and ceramic bearings. He undertakes 're-do' or revision hip replacement surgery and has a decade of experience of the use of hip resurfacing (e.g. the 'Birmingham' hip, an option for younger and more active patients).

Mr Burwell continues with a trauma practice at the Royal United Hospital, in particular specialising in surgery for complex fractures of the hip and for fractures around previous hip replacements implants (i.e. peri-prosthetic fractures).

Personal profile

Mr Burwell is married to Susie, who trained as a theatre nurse at St. Thomas' Hospital in London. They have two sons, Charlie and James, and a dog called Lottie. Mr Burwell can be glimpsed (less frequently than he should be) at the University of Bath gym and running around the lanes near his home!

  • Hip resurfacing

  • Complex hip fractures

  • Primary/revision hip replacement implants (including hip resurfacing, uncemented and cemented hip replacements)

Research interests

Mr Burwell is currently involved with a British orthopaedic company in the development of a novel type of hip implant for use in younger patients and, with the same company, one of a group of surgeons involved in early clinical trial of a new bearing surface. The hope is that this new bearing surface will wear less and lead to an increase in the longevity of hip replacements and reduce the need for 're-do' revision surgery.
