Personal Profile

Mr Nick Fernandez studied medicine at the London Hospital Medical College qualifying in 1976. He undertook house jobs in Hastings and Chichester, SHO in neurosurgery and A&E at The London Hospital, surgical SHO rotation in Exeter, SHO orthopaedics in Bath and General Surgical Registrar in Poole. He passed FRCS in 1982. He then trained on the Wessex Orthopaedic Rotation at Portsmouth, Alton and Southampton. He passed FRCS Ed (Orth) in 1989.

He was appointed as Consultant in orthopaedics and trauma in 1993 in West Dorset as a General Orthopaedic Surgeon with a paediatric interest.

He has developed a subspecialist interest in shoulder surgery. Nick was an invited member of faculty at the Reading Advanced Shoulder Course 2013.

He travels regularly in Europe and North America to visit other surgeons and learn new techniques.

Thanks to his many years of experience and learning, he offers a holistic approach to diagnosing conditions that may be affecting more than one part of the body.

Nick is married to Joanne and has 3 children. They live near Weymouth. He enjoys skiing, cycling, kite-surfing, and paddle boarding with his family. He keeps bees and is a keen gardener. He enjoys playing the flute (badly!).

  • Arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee
  • Shoulder, hip and knee arthroplasty

Research Interests

He has publications on acl reconstruction, peudarthrosis of the ulnar, internal fixation of the lateral malleolus in the elderly, locking of mcp joints, retrosternal dislocation of the clavicle, shoulder decompression techniques and is currently participating in CSAW trial.
