Allergy Testing

Allergy testing - Prick testing for Type I Allergy

What is Type I allergy?
This is where the body reacts abnormally to substances naturally present in our environment such as pollen, dust, pets, latex and foods including nuts. Allergy is on the increase in Western European countries. Patients with asthma, eczema, allergic conjunctivitis and hay fever are more commonly affected. Reactions often occur very quickly on exposure to the allergen, eg itchy eyes and wheezing within a few minutes of exposure to cats.

What does Type I allergy testing involve?
First a detailed and prolonged history is taken with questioning about the exact nature and severity of the symptoms being experienced. Allergy testing, if appropriate, is carried out by pricking microscopic amounts of liquid allergens through the skin (usually on the forearm) and checking some minutes later to see whether the skin has reacted to the substance (eg latex). If any foods are suspected to be causing reactions, they should be brought to the consultation, separately wrapped and labelled, and these can also be tested.

When will I be able to go home after testing?
The itchy reactions on the test site usually last approximately  half an hour but you will be able to go home before they disappear.

What risks should I know about?
Prick testing is extremely safe. It is exceptionally rare to experience any serious reaction. Occasionally  patients with severe pollen allergy may experience a temporary runny nose or itchy eyes during testing. Questioning before testing is intended to identify any rare patients more at risk of undergoing a more severe reaction eg wheezing. Occasionally prick testing will be thought potentially hazardous and a blood test may be suggested instead. Full resuscitation equipment is available at CircleBath. It is recommended that patients bring to their consultation any inhalers, antihistamine tablets and adrenaline autoinjector devices such as Epipen.
