What are Excessive Sweating Treatments?
Sweating is controlled by parts of the brain which send signals
along your nerves to the small sweat glands in the skin.
These nerves are part of the "automatic nervous system" which
controls many unconscious body functions.
Excesssive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis) can be generalised or local
to specific parts of your body. Your palms, scalp and armpits
are among the most likely areas to be affected due to the
relatively high concentration of sweat glands.
Extreme perspiration or sweating can be an embarrassing
condition and can affect self-confidence and social
interactions. We are able to provide quick relief from this
condition through simple treatments carried out at our Outpatient
clinics.
What does this involve?
We offer two types of treatment - Botulinum Injections and
Iontophoresis.
The most commonly used treatment involves an injection of
Botulinum toxin (often referred to by the brand name 'Botox®') into
your skin in very small, carefully controlled doses. The
medication works by blocking the nerve signal to perspire from
reaching the sweat glands.
Perspiration normally diminishes substantially within 72 hours
and the results can last from four to eighteen months before the
treatment needs repeating. Botulinum toxin is most commonly
used for underarm sweating as it is not suitable for large
areas.
Iontophoresis is an alternative sweating treatment which uses a
machine to pass a very small electric current into the skin of the
hands and / or feet. This reduces or stops the eccrine sweat
glands from producing sweat temporarily. During Iontophoresis
treatment, your hands or feet will be placed in a tray full of tap
water.
Tap water contains ions (charged particles) in the water that
cause the Iontophoresis effect. Treatments take about 20
minutes per time and seven treatments are usually required in the
first four weeks. Iontophoresis usually needs to be repeated
every six weeks to six months depending on your individual
condition.
