What is endometrial ablation?
An endometrial ablation is an operation to remove the lining of
the uterus (womb). After the operation most women will
experience a noticeable reduction in their periods, and in some
cases, periods stop completely.
The need for an endometrial ablation is to relieve heavy periods
usually caused by:
- Fibroids where the muscle of the womb is overgrown
- Polyps which is a small skin tag
- Excessive thickening of the lining of the womb
What will this involve?
A microwave endometrial ablation can be performed under local or
general anaesthetic and normally takes less than twenty
minutes.
Your gynaecologist will pass a small telescope (hysteroscope)
through your vagina and cervix and into the cavity in your
womb. Fluid will be passed through the telescope to distend
your womb.
They will check that your womb is the correct size and shape for
you to have the operation and they may take a biopsy. A
microwave probe will be placed into your womb and removed slowly
(one to three minutes) to ensure the whole cavity of the womb is
treated. The probe will release enough microwave energy to
remove the lining of your womb to a safe depth

When will I recover?
You should be able to go home the same day although your doctor
may recommend you stay a little longer. You may experience
some period like cramps and mild bleeding which can be treated with
pain killers. You should rest for one or two days and you
should be able to return to normal activities within two to four
days.

What risks should I know about?
Microwave endometrial ablation is a routinely performed
operation but nevertheless carries some small risks.
- Making a hole in the womb or damage to a nearby structure -
risk less than 1%
- Haematometra where blood and other menstrual fluids collect in
pockets in cavities in the womb.
