What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects the joints of the
body, particularly the cartilage lining of the joints which help to
allow fluid smooth movement. Joints that have Osteoarthritis
have reduced levels of cartilage lining causing them to feel stiff
and painful. This in time can lead to muscle weakness and tightness
if you reduce your activity due to the arthritis symptoms.
What does this involve?
The Osteoarthritis Programme is six weeks long with one 60
minute session each week, aiming to equip you with the knowledge on
how to manage your arthritis day to day with educational talks from
experts in their field including Drug treatments, Dietary
Management, Activity-Rest Cycles, Management of Flare-ups,
Relaxation techniques including Tai Chi and managing activities of
daily living
Alongside this you will participate in a 30 minute gym based
exercise class tailored to your level of ability and needs. Gentle
frequent exercise will help your joints to stay flexible and
strong, helping to reduce long term pain and swelling and also
improve your balance, walking pattern and functional ability.
The class will include using an exercise bike, light weights,
balance boards, treadmill and gym balls. You can have a rest at
anytime during the class. You will be shown on your induction how
to do all the exercises that are appropriate for your individual
ability before starting the six week program.
You will also have an opportunity to try Hydrotherapy as part of
the programme if your physiotherapist feels that land based
exercise will exacerbate your pain.
