What is an Ovarian Cyst?
Your ovaries are located on either side of your womb and ovarian
cysts are fluid filled pockets within or on the surface of an
ovary. Most cysts are harmless and don't cause any pain or
discomfort, however some cysts cause serious symptoms and need to
be removed.
What does this involve?
There are two methods for removing ovarian cysts either through
'keyhole' laparoscopic surgery or through and open operation.
Both are called cystectomies and are usually carried out under
general anaesthetic.
In open cystectomy, an incision is made either horizontally
along the top of the bikini line or vertically from just below the
belly button. The ovary is opened and the cyst is lifted out.
In laparoscopic cystectomy, smaller incisions are made and the
cysts are removed using specially designed surgical
instruments.

When will I recover?
You should be able to go home the same day once you have
recovered from the anaesthetic and you will need to rest for a day
or two.

What risks should I know about
Ovarian cyst removal is a commonly performed and generally safe
procedure although all surgery does carry an element of risk.
Possible complications of any surgery include excessive bleeding
during or soon after the operation, infection, or an unexpected
reaction to the anaesthetic.
