RWB Auctions in Wiltshire, UK, is set to host a remarkable auction of rare Muhammad Ali memorabilia on 11 September. The collection, which includes never-before-seen photographs and unique film footage, comes from a private seller who worked with the boxing legend in the 1970s.
A Legendary Collection of Ali Memories
Among the items up for auction are unpublished negatives and original test sheets featuring more than 200 candid photographs of Ali. This collection offers a rare glimpse into the life of one of the most iconic figures in sports history. The photographs come with a transfer of copyrights, focusing on Ali’s charismatic presence both inside and outside the ring.
Another highlight of the auction is a unique 35mm master film reel of an advertisement featuring Muhammad Ali. Filmed in 1971, this reel includes a 2-minute 33-second advert for Amstel Malta, a non-alcoholic beverage. The footage showcases Ali in his classic boxing attire, delivering his renowned brand of poetry and braggadocio. This particular advert was aimed at the African market and was not broadcast in Europe. The reel also includes alternative versions of the advert and an informal chat with Ali discussing the content.
The Significance of the Advert
The advert, shot shortly after Ali’s ‘Fight of the Century’ loss to Joe Frazier, highlights Ali’s continued influence and popularity. Despite his many endorsements, Ali was known for his refusal to promote alcohol due to his religious beliefs. This non-alcoholic Malta advert was a rare exception. The master reel up for auction is a unique piece of history, with only one other known copy existing in an 18mm format within the Amstel archive.
Photographs and Memorabilia
In addition to the film reel, the auction will feature a collection of more than 200 unpublished photographic negatives and test sheets from the Amstel Malta advert session. These images, mostly focusing on Ali, offer a candid look at the event and his interactions during the shoot.
Also on offer is signed memorabilia including a photo and paper autographed by Ali, as well as a commemorative medal from the mid-1970s. These items were gifted to the current owner during a meeting with Ali when he was a child, adding a personal touch to the collection.
